WHAT I’VE BEEN READING: Staying with Conflict by Bernard Mayer

This book is not new, it’s been around since 2009, but it remains one of the few books about how to work with conflict that is not resolvable, or that may take many years to resolve. The book introduces the role of the conflict specialist (in contrast to the more limited ‘conflict resolver’ and their role in supporting people in enduring conflict.  The book provides a clear distinction between conflict resolution and conflict engagement, and how to escape the conflict trap.  It explores the nature of conflict narratives, and how to work with them for long term conflict framing. There are chapters on managing communication, power and escalation, and agreements in ongoing conflicts.  This book remains a must read in the field.

Claire Holland and Judith Rafferty have also consulted with the author, Bernard Mayer, as they have developed his work further into the PACE mode – a Planned Approach to Conflict Engagement – which provides support for practitioners and their clients to work with enduring conflict in a constructive and sustainable way.

Join Claire and Judith when they present their model in our next webinar, Beyond Resolution.  Find out more and register here: https://www.conflictmanagementacademy.com/webinar-beyond-resolution-a-planned-approach-to-conflict-engagement/
