WHAT I’VE BEEN READING: Trust by Henry Cloud

This new book by Dr Henry Cloud, clinical psychologist and leadership consultant, provides a good overview of trust – how it works, what’s required to have trust, how to develop trust and repair it when it is broken.

Cloud explains that “we can become better and better at knowing who is trustworthy and who is not. And we can get better at deciding when and with whom we will put ourselves at risk.” This book explains what we need to know in order to do this.

Cloud’s five main lessons about what is required for trust are:

  1. You can trust someone when you feel your needs are understood, felt, and cared about.
  2. You can trust someone when you feel their motive is for you, not just for themselves.
  3. You can trust someone when you feel they have the ability or capacity to guard and deliver results for what you have entrusted to them.
  4. You can trust someone who has the character or personal makeup needed for what you entrust them with.
  5. You can trust someone who has a track record of performing in the ways you need them to perform.

This book is easy to read and explains trust in a straight forward way. There are case studies and plenty of practical tips. It is useful for anyone who is interested in how trust impacts on their personal and professional lives.
