About the webinar

Sport is often praised for its ability to unite, inspire, and build character. Yet, in the heat of competition, even the most level-headed individuals can find themselves acting in ways they normally wouldn’t. What is it about sport that promotes conflict—between coaches and officials, players and umpires, or even among supporters? And how can these tensions be managed effectively?

This webinar explores the psychology behind decision-making in high-stakes environments and how different roles in sport can lead to unexpected challenges. Whether you have a background in sport or not, the insights into human behaviour, conflict resolution, and managing competing interests will resonate across industries.

Join us as we examine why sport challenges our usual instincts and what can be learned from these moments of conflict

About your trainer

Debra Farrelly has more than 30 years’ experience in the education sector in administration and leadership. She holds a Master of Education, Graduate Diploma in Conflict Management and Resolution and Graduate Certificate in Business Administration.

For most of her career she worked in Australian universities holding senior leadership and executive positions in Student Services and Corporate Services divisions before moving into her own consulting business and gaining accreditation in mediation and conflict coaching. She regularly works with teams, individuals and organisations experiencing or preparing for change in the workplace. She is committed to continuous process improvement and dedicated to ensuring individuals and teams deliver quality services by “doing the simple things well”. Working with people to achieve this is what she likes to do.

Outside of work she has enjoyed being a part of netball. Her involvement initially was as a player and later as a member of the Australian National Pool of Umpires (AA umpire) and International Netball Umpire (IUA) and later stemmed into working on strategic committees as well as education programs and assessments. In 2021 she was engaged by Netball Australia to identify and develop Australia’s high-performance umpires. In 2024 she developed and delivered workshops for sporting officials to better manage conflict.
